In the picturesque mountain village of Lete, flanked by the soaring Himalayan peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri in central Nepal, Som Pariyar saw a snake for the first time last year.
“We were shocked. Even our elders had never seen a big snake in the village in their lifetimes,” said the 38-year-old trekking guide. “Everyone can feel the change. We have mosquitoes and flies now, even at this altitude. Last June, I saw a swarm of locusts in the village for the first time.”
